Game summarieseditWednesday, October 7, 1. Sky. Dome in Toronto, Ontario. The first game of the series had Oaklands Dave Stewart face off against Torontos Jack Morris. The As put up a three spot against Morris in the second inning, as Mark Mc. Gwire and Terry Steinbach hit back to back home runs. Stewart held the Jays scoreless until the fifth, when catcher Pat Borders homered to put Toronto on the board. Dave Winfield added another solo shot for Toronto in the sixth, and in the eighth a base hit by John Olerud scored Winfield to tie the game. However, Oakland took the lead right back in the top of the ninth, when Harold Baines led off the inning with a solo home run. As closer Dennis Eckersley then shut down the Jays in the bottom half of the inning to preserve a 43 victory and give the Athletics a 10 lead in the series. Thursday, October 8, 1. Sky. Dome in Toronto, Ontario. Game 2 saw Oaklands Mike Moore face the Jays David Cone. The game was initially a pitchers duel, as Moore and Cone put up zeroes for the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, however, Torontos Kelly Gruber hit a two run home run off Moore to give the Jays the lead. In the seventh, Gruber doubled, took third on a grounder, and came home on a Manuel Lee sacrifice fly to extend the Toronto lead to three. The As avoided a shutout in the top of the ninth, when Rubn Sierra tripled and scored on a single by Baines, but that was all they could muster against Toronto closer Tom Henke. The Jays took the second game and tied the series at a game apiece. Saturday, October 1. OaklandAlameda County Coliseum in Oakland, California. The series shifted to Oakland for Game 3, as Juan Guzmn took the hill for the Jays while Ron Darling toed the rubber for the As. Toronto struck in the second, when Winfield reached on an error by Athletics third baseman Carney Lansford, moved to third on a wild pitch by Darling, and scored on a single by Candy Maldonado. Roberto Alomar hit a solo home run in the fourth to give the Jays a 20 lead, but in the bottom half of the inning the As tied the game with RBI base hits by Baines and Steinbach. However, the very next inning, Maldonado hit a solo homer of his own, and after Oakland manager Tony La Russa gave Darling the hook in the seventh, the Jays added two unearned runs due to an error by Lance Blankenship and a triple by Lee, making it a 52 game. Although the As cut Torontos lead down to a run, the Jays tacked on single runs in the eighth and ninth. Henke retired the Athletics in order in the ninth, giving Toronto a 75 victory and a 21 edge in the series. Sunday, October 1. OaklandAlameda County Coliseum in Oakland, California. For the fourth game, Toronto threw Morris against Oaklands Bob Welch. In the second inning, Olerud tagged Welch for a solo homer to give the Jays the lead. However, the Athletics came back in a big way with a five run third and tacked on another run in the sixth when Sierra doubled Rickey Henderson home, giving Oakland a seemingly secure 61 advantage. In the top of the eighth, however, La Russa pulled Welch, who had been cruising along, and went to his bullpen. The Jays capitalized by scoring three runs off hits by Joe Carter, Olerud, and Maldonado, cutting the As lead to 64. In the top of the ninth, La Russa turned to Eckersley to shut down the Jays. Eckersley had given up two of Torontos three runs in the previous innings, but La Russa decided to stay with his best closer. Devon White led off with a triple to left. Roberto Alomar was up next, and he hit a high line drive to right field that disappeared behind the wall for a game tying two run home run. This turned out to be a crucial point of the series, as it forced the game into extra innings and gave the Jays a chance to win. Indeed, in the top of the eleventh, Toronto came through. Derek Bell walked, moved to third on a Maldonado single, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Borders to give the Jays a 76 lead. Henke shut the door on the As in the bottom of the inning, handing Toronto a 31 series lead. Monday, October 1. OaklandAlameda County Coliseum in Oakland, California. Game 5 pitted Torontos Cone against Oaklands Stewart. In the bottom of the first, Sierra cracked a two run home run off Cone. In the third inning an error by Cone on a pickoff attempt proved costly, as Henderson advanced to 3rd and then scored on a single by Jerry Browne. Although Winfield broke the shutout with a homer off Stewart in the fourth, the unearned runs continued to hurt the Jays, as the As added three runs in the fifth only one of which was earned for a 61 lead. Toronto managed only one more run in the seventh when White singled Gruber home, and Stewart went the distance as the Athletics took a 62 victory and cut the Jays advantage in the series to 32. A stunning mid game turnaround has seen the Spotswood senior side cement 2nd spot on the WRFL ladder ahead of the final game of the season this weekend. With their backs against the wall, a seemingly flat Spotswood side was well and truly on the back foot against Werribee on Saturday heading into the final term down by 2. But despite the deficit, the Woodsmen managed to find the next gear they had been searching for in recent weeks, which have included a demoralising loss to Hoppers Crossing and a sloppy encounter against St Albans. Murray Boyd was inspirational once again. Inspired by defender turned forward Gareth Newtons aerial acrobatics and the returning defender Sam Davis run, the Woodsmen flipped a forgone conclusion into a thrilling win. Davis and Newton had fought their hardest to contain the scoring for most of the day, with Davis return from injury a welcome sight. Despite showing flashes of their hard running game style, the Woodsmen just could not put it together for the length of the field, with mistakes proving crucial throughout the contest. Tom Langlands was relentless for the entire game, and shifted the momentum in the final term with his midfield grunt work, which was ably assisted by skipper Murray Boyd in the ruck. The elderly statesmen of the team, Langlands and Boyd proved their game is still a head and shoulders above the competition, with their skill level and fitness prominent once again. It is without surprise that these two will be high on the list of vote getters for both the club and league vote counts as the season progresses. With the game on the line, coach Eames decided to throw caution out the window and roll the dice, moving his talisman defender Newton deep forward in the final term. The move proved a master stroke as Newton calmly slotted a goal to get his side back in the game before a series of towering marks crushed the hearts of the Werribee faithful. Although Newton had the chance to win the game off his own boot, a miscalculation of his run up saw his kick smothered in the dying seconds. The passage of play did not go without reward though, as a quick thinking Josh Norton swooped on the pill and kicked a behind under immense pressure. The leadership and guidance of Boyd and Langlands ensured the Woodsmen controlled the dying minutes of the game, resulting in a terrific victory. This win gives the Woodsmen breathing space on the ladder, before they gear up to take on Caroline Springs in the final game this Saturday before the 2. Final score Spotswood 8. Werribee 9. 7. 6. A vintage display by Will Langlands wasnt enough to score victory over Werribee in what was an entertaining game of football. Langlands was the clear best on ground on the day, perhaps inspired by the raucous crowd support that was on offer to him in the way of some returning premiership heroes for their respective reunions. Sean Buttigieg Clarke provided some highlights with his three goals, using his goal nous to great advantage over his opponents for the day, while Langlands also chimed in with 2 majors. Tom Doer Tolhurst displayed a knack for finding the ball in the windy conditions, a wind specialist according to some, while Jeremy Cross and Brayden Macdonald also tried their best.
